Did You Know Breezy Point Was This Bad?

Looking through a camera really detaches you from reality.

The media did Breezy Point no justice. You have to see it to believe it. Yeah, when I saw the images on CNN, ABC, Fox, etc. my eyes widened and curiosity peaked, but when Michael and I walked down the narrow street lined with beach-style homes, and patches of washed up sand under our feet, the scent of burnt something filled the air fresh and thick. The media’s aerial photos of the 100 plus homes that had been burnt to the ground suddenly came to life. They had character. They had depth. They had a scent. They had perspective. They had meaning.

Looking through a camera really detaches you from reality.

Screen Shot 2012-12-07 at 8.08.57 PM We were directed by the daughter and wife of the chief of the fire department that the now infamous “the houses that burned the the ground” were right up the road. As we walked, camera in tow, the realization of what we were about to see didn’t phase me. After walking a few blocks the shade from the surviving houses discontinued, and all that was visible was a vast field of dark, burnt ruble. Faint cement squares of the foundation of the homes were the only reminder of what I was looking at: over a hundred of homes. Everything was gray and black. Everything was destroyed. Everything was burnt until it couldn’t burn anymore. There was no order, just the contents of what exist in homes, lying scattered around. Even the ground and telephone wires were burnt.

I was eagerly gathering footage of the wreckage as we walked along the road and then bam: When we reached ground zero my knees feel weak, the lump in my throat swelled, and my head was light as hell. “Whoa.” Peeling my eyes from the camera screen and looking at the pummeled land before me shook me to the core. It was unreal. My breathing quickened and I had to rest the camera.

It was like I was walking through a war zone where a bomb was detonated. People’s homes, their everything’s, were reduced to ash, and what look liked, coal. The whole experience (for lack of a better word) was very moving.

Mom’s Helpful Hints #2 Packing Light

Hi all,
Today I bring you Mom’s Helpful #3 on Packing Light.  We have been traveling together since my father passed away in 2006.  Our trips have taken us all around the world including India, Israel, Portugal and Italy.  Mom only travels with a carry-on bag.  It doesn’t matter how long we are away or how far we go, she manages to take all she needs in one little bag. Me, well, that’s a different story. I’m always concerned that I have enough clothing that will cover all seasons.

Mom has the answers how to manage all that you need in one little suitcase that you take on the plane.  It’s safer in many ways. You don’t risk losing your bag and you don’t have wait for it to come off the plane.  You land and you are on your way, that is once you get through immigration and customs.  Easy and fast way to travel.

And if you want to learn more about our upcoming film, please visit our Kickstarter campaign and please consider joining our team by participating and becoming a backer.  It doesn’t take much and you get a lot.

Have a great day!
Much love,

Gayle

My Nose: The Bigger Version (Teaser)

In the short film, My Nose, filmmaker Gayle Kirschenbaum introduced us to her mom?s quest to get her to have a nose job. Barely touching the surface of their highly complex and charged relationship, Kirschenbaum knew it needed to go deeper. The long, miraculous and poignant journey is told in her new feature film, MY NOSE: THE BIGGER VERSION. What emerges is a uniquely cinematic, courageous and intimate family study with both humor and pathos in the midst of conflicts and affections that bind mother and daughter. It is an entertaining, inspiring and enlightening film that will touch audiences worldwide.
